Saylor was born on February 4, 1965, in Lincoln, Nebraska. His childhood was spent around various Airforce bases around the world as his father was in the American Air Force. When Saylor was around 11 years old, his family moved to Fairborn, Ohio.
Michael enrolled at MIT in 1983 through a scholarship from the Air Force ROTC. He graduated from MIT in 1987 with a major in aeronautics and technology. During his college days, he met Sanju Bansal who later on became the cofounder of MicroStrategy.

Saylor was not able to become a pilot because of some underlying medical condition. Knowing this he started his career with a consulting firm in 1987 where he worked on computer simulation for a software company. After a year, Saylor started working as an internal consultant at DuPont.
With the funds he got from DuPont, Saylor founded MicroStrategy along with his college friend Sanju Bansal. The company was primarily focused on building data mining and Business intelligence software. In 1992, they won a $10 million contract with McDonald’s to develop software to analyze their promotions.
MicroStrategy went public in June 1998. The initial stock offering was around 4 million shares. Each share was initially priced at $12. The shares doubled on the initial day itself.
